Being able to buy an apartment in Arbat has always been considered highly prestige. As early as the USSR era, the district was popular among top-ranking Communist party members. In the 1970s and 1980s, some ten white-brick twin residential blocks with fenced territory and entrance-hall concierges, were erected on the Arbat lanes. At the end of the century, Arbat became sought-after among Moscow real estate developers, and many desired to get their hands on this dainty area. Erecting buildings in Arbat turned out to be extremely profitable; the development went at full tilt.

Compared to the old housing stock or the CC housing, it is a costly affair to buy an apartment at the Arbat lanes in a newly erected building. The prices here start from $ 20,000 per square metre.

The landmark of Arbat is still the same-name street - Arbat Street - which was the first pedestrian street in Moscow. Even so, it is not this street that makes the district so charming. The classic words by Bulat Okudzhava - "Your pedestrians are not exalted people, their heels pound, they hurry on their way. Oh my Arbat, you are my religion ... "- are now but history; today's Arbat Street is a travel Mecca teeming with tourists, painters, gift shops, restaurants, McDonalds places and other attributes of the modern age.

So why is apartment sale in Arbat in such high demand on the real estate market? The answer to this question lies a hundred steps deeper into the district lanes. Fortunately, they have not changed much: you will find the same old narrow side-streets, low-rise houses with interesting facades, courtyards breathing with greenery, children's laughter on playgrounds - and it is very hard to believe that you are still in the very center of Russia's capital city.
