Being able to live in or rent out an apartment in Arbat has always been a sign of prestige. As far back as the USSR era, the Soviet elite - the nomenklatura - was especially partial to residing in this district. Then, at the turn of the 1980s, some ten white-brick twin apartment buildings were constructed. Today, they are called "the CC buildings", after the abbreviated name of the Soviet Union's highest administrative body of that time - the Central Committee. Understandably, at the end of the 20th century, numerous real estate developers ferociously competed for these dainty development areas. Many companies were willing to build apartments in Arbat, and for this reason, buildings popped up like mushrooms after a spring rain.

In contrast to the old housing stock or the CC housing, it can be very expensive to buy or rent an apartment in Arbat in a newly erected building. For instance, the monthly rental fee for a two-room apartment starts from $ 3,000, as compared to $ 2,000 for renting in a regular building.

Even though Arbat Street (which, by the way, was the first pedestrian street in Moscow) remains the same-name district's centre of attraction, it is not this street that defines the district's charm and popularity among Moscow residents. Long ago poets and bards praised Arbat in their writing and songs. The classic words by Bulat Okudzhava - "Your pedestrians are not exalted people, their heels pound, they hurry on their way. Oh my Arbat, you are my religion ... "- can be deeply felt only through a spiritual travel to the turn of the 1970s. Today's Arbat Street is noisy, swarming with tourists, full of gift shops and painters willing to draw you, and teeming with McDonalds restaurants and other achievements of the modern age.

But once you go some 200 meters deeper into the Arbat lanes, you will find yourself in a distant past. Narrow side-streets, cozy mini-parks, low-rise houses with interesting facades, c
